Heating & Lighting systems for pig houses
Gasolec B.V. has been a renowned supplier of heating and lighting systems for in the pig market for decades. Below we try to explain to you the necessity of good heating and lighting systems.
Heating systems for pig houses
Proper heating is considered a must within pig houses. The first aim is that the room temperature is correct. No less important are a good floor temperature in the right area and a dry floor. Germs thrive better in a humid environment and at a time when everybody is striving for a minimal use of antibiotics, a dry floor is an important aid in this endeavour.
Heating in the farrowing section
With small piglets, the first priority is that once the piglets have a full belly, that they move away from their mother to avoid the risks of being crushed to death. In practice, “piglets nests” are created to prevent this problem from happening: an extra warm place where the new born piglets with their thin skin and no ‘bacon’ layer can go to lie down, safely under a Gasolec gas heater.
Heating in the piglet rearing section
When the piglets go from the farrowing section to the rearing section, it is important that these animals arrive in a warm & dry (= a germ-poor) environment for the best transition to a life without the mother. Gasolec gas heaters with their infrared radiant heat are well suited for this application. It is usually sufficient if a part of the new living space is dry & warm, so that is it not necessary to heat the entire house, which can lead to significant cost savings.
Combining rearing and fattening = Wean-to-Finish
In pig farming, stress & hygiene are important factors to take into account and every time the animals are moved from one section to another it means stress for the animals and extra work for the farmer. The main reason for moving the animals is because they ‘grow out of their pig pens'. In a piglet rearing pen for example, we talk about a 0,3m² floor space per animal and here we aim for approx. 28°C when the piglets arrive from the farrowing section weighing 6-7kg.
Approx. 5 weeks later the animals have grown to about 25-30kg. By this time, they will need more space and the room temperature can drop to 21-22°C. At that weight, the animals usually go on to the pig fattening department where they often get 0.8-1.0m² floor space per animal, sometimes even more.
The advantage of this method in two phases (rearing and fattening) is that in the rearing phase one can save on m² of floorspace and lower heating costs as less surface needs to be heated. However, a disadvantage of moving from the weaner to the fattening pens is 1x extra stress for the animals and 1x extra cleaning for the farmer.
The alternative is to take the piglets directly from the farrowing section to the fattening section, but then one must provide warm & dry lying areas for the piglets when they arrive in this much larger ward with their small 6-7kg bodies.
This system, the so-called ‘Wean-to-Finish’ system is very popular in a number of countries, because it reduces labour costs. In practice, it has been experienced that by using Gasolec heaters, in particular the M-types & G-Types, it is possible to create very nice comfort zones for the animals without heating the entire house.
These heaters create warm & dry places where the animals can lie comfortably under an artificial sun, a Gasolec gas heater. A standard characteristic of the M-type and G-type heaters is that they are made of stainless steel and therefore they can be cleaned with water & detergents.
All our heaters are made in our own factory, located in the city of Bodegraven in the Netherlands.
Lighting systems for in pig houses
Proper lighting in a pig house is crucial for the performance and welfare of the pigs. Having the right light makes the animals feel more comfortable and they will eventually perform better. Because the eyesight of pigs is different from that of humans, they also need a different light intensity. Gasolec B.V. has the right knowledge and experience to advise you on which lighting system is needed in which phase of your production cycle.
What LED lighting system is needed in pig houses?
There are different lighting needs at each stage of the production cycle. For example, in the farrowing phase it is important that lighting stimulates the biological clock and biorhythm. A good lighting system will also improve the welfare and fertility of the pigs. In the mating phase it is important that fertility is stimulated. In all stages, good light is important for pigs to get a good feed intake.
In general, when the correct light intensity and light quantity is set, the pigs feel more at ease. When the pigs feel more at ease, this ensures better welfare, less stress and an improved performance.
LED lighting in pig stables for the growth of pigs
Gasolec B.V. offers various LED lighting systems for your pigsties. Research has shown that the use of LED lighting results in pigs that eat better and therefore experience a larger and faster growth. In addition, the use of LED lighting in pig stables ensures lower energy consumption and a longer lifetime span, which ultimately results in lower costs.
Gasolec B.V. offers LED lighting in a variety of colours and strengths (wattage). For usage in pig houses, the Prolucent LED bulbs 12W regular and 12W DimTo are the first to be considered. These and other LED lights from Gasolec B.V. are of high quality for a competitive price. Especially the IP65 waterproof light unit with the LED Bulbs inside, are easy to clean with water and disinfectants. This is important to minimize disease risks in a pigsty. If you are set on a minimum waterproof certification of IP67, we offer a variety of LED tubes. These T-series are available – again – in different colours and light output strengths. All the T-series tubes are IP69K certified. This is the highest possible rating one can get.
At Gasolec we sell – as mentioned above – light systems with different colours and colour temperatures. A very popular colour is 2700 Kelvin, which is extra warm white light. This is a slightly reddish white colour, to create a warm yet bright environment in stables.
Our Prolucent 12 Watt DimTo LED Bulb goes even one step further. It changes colour temperature when the lamp is dimmed up or down. The LED bulb starts at 2000K and as the brightness increases, the colour temperature rises to 4000K. This makes it possible to give animals a real sense of sunrise and sunset on a daily basis.
