Proper heating is a fundamental requirement within pig houses, aiming to achieve the correct room temperature. Equally crucial is maintaining a good floor temperature in the designated areas and ensuring the floor remains dry, as germs proliferate in moist conditions. In this regard, a dry floor significantly aids in the effort to minimize antibiotic use. Integrating pig lighting systems complements the heating by promoting better visibility and well-being for the pigs, which can further support the health and cleanliness of the environment.
With small piglets, the first priority is that once the piglets have a full belly that they move away from the mother to avoid the risks of being crushed by the sow. In practice, “piglets’ nests” are created to prevent this problem from happening: an extra warm place where the newborn piglets with their thin skin and no ‘bacon’ layer can lie down, safely under a Gasolec gas heater.
As piglets transition from the maternity ward to the piglet rearing ward, it's essential they enter a warm and dry environment. Gasolec's infrared heaters effectively provide this, minimizing the need to heat the entire space, which can lead to cost savings. Complementary pig lighting in this phase ensures piglets are encouraged to explore and feed, optimizing their growth and health during this critical developmental stage.
In pig farming, stress & hygiene are important factors to take into account and every time the animals move from one department to another it means stress for the animals and extra work for the farmer. One of the reasons for moving the animals is because they ‘grow out of their cages’. In a piglet rearing department, for example, we talk about a 0,3m² floorspace per animal and here we aim for a room temperature of approx. 28°C when the piglets arrive from the farrowing section weighing 6-7kg at arrival.
Approx. 5 weeks later the animals have grown to 25-30kg and they need more space, and the temperature can drop to 21-22°C. At that age, the animals usually go on to the pig fattening section where they often get 0.8-1.0m² floorspace per animal, sometimes even more.
In a Wean-to-Finish system the piglets still arrive weighing about 6-7kg and they stay there until they leave for a slaughterhouse. This means one time less moving of the animals and one time less cleaning for farmer, but it also means that in the Wean-to-Finish pig pen must be ok for the pigs from 6 to about 110-115kg live weight. The Gasolec M8 as well as the G12 Asco are popular there for creating a comfort zone that is both warm & dry to give the small piglets a good start. At the same time, since there is a good comfort zone, it isn’t necessary to warm the whole place to 27-28ºC.
There are different lighting needs at each stage of the production cycle. For example, in the farrowing section it is important that the pig lighting stimulates the biological clock and to create a stress-free environment. In the mating phase it is important that the fertility of the sow is stimulated. In addition, good light is important for a good feed intake in fattening pigs. In general, when the correct light intensity and light spectrum is set, the pigs feel more at ease. When the pigs feel more at ease, this ensures a better welfare and a better performance.
Gasolec B.V. offers LED lighting in a variety of colors and strengths (wattage). For use in pig houses, the Prolucent LED bulbs 12W regular and 12W DimTo are the first to be considered. These and other LED pig lighting from Gasolec B.V. are of high quality for a relatively low price. In an IP65 waterproof version, these lamps are easy to clean with water and disinfectants. This is important to minimize disease risks in a pigsty. If you are set on a minimum waterproof certification of IP67 or higher, we offer LED tubes. These T-series are available – again – in different colors and light output strengths. All the T-series tubes are IP69K certified. This is the highest possible rating that you can get.
